Herculaneum is a small coast city of Campania, halfway on the coastal road that runs from Naples to Pompeii and the towns of Nocera, Stabiae and Sorrento.

The city was flooded by fast and fiery volcanic mud, ashes mixed with water, solidified to determine a phenomenon of storage absolutely original, different from Pompeii, returning organic finds (vegetables, textiles, furniture and parts of wooden buildings) but also the upper floors of buildings and with them an idea of the volumes and construction techniques, allowing us to reconstruct the history of the Roman house through nearly three centuries, from the 2nd century BC until the eruption of 79.

Particular is the regularity of the urban with the decumani which run parallel to the coast, and the cardi, perpendicular to them, that define the so called Insulae..
